Just like 118 692, also a member of our museumcollection, 118 748 is another representative of the change of traction from steam to diesel locomotives on the Deutsche Reichsbahn which started at the end of the 1960s. "748" was in service in Thuringia with the Deutsche Reichsbahn then later with the Deutsche Bahn AG until 1998, mistly working from Erfurt depot.

In 1998, the Deutsche Bahn sold the locomotive to its subsidiary company the Mitteldeutsche Eisenbahn, which operated the loco in freight and special train service until early 2015. Failure of one of the motor bearings ruled out further service and since the next works inspection was due on 8.5.2015 anyway, it was decided not to undertake the necessary repairs.

On 18.4.2015 the loco was handed over into the care of the Historische Lokschuppen Wittenberge on long-term loan. Meanwhile, the loco has been cosmetically restored to its last appearance on the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Its last trip was on 3.5.2015 Wittenberge
